Welcome to Year 2!
The staff in Year 2 this year are Mrs. Jeavons, Miss Strophair, Mrs. Graham and Miss Smith.
To access their learning from home, please find below the links to their lessons this week. These lessons follow closely with what your child would be learning this week in class.
Hi Year 2,
So we have completed another week of home learning and we have missed not having everyone in class, but we are so proud of the response and quality of the work that you have been sending in – you are AWESOME!! and make us so proud.
This week we had our first live lessons which we really enjoyed and are looking forward to more this next week. Mrs Jeavons will be live on Wednesday afternoon at 1pm where she will be working through your PSHCE task for this week on being happy. Miss Strophair will be delivering the same lesson live on Wednesday at 2pm. You will be sent an email link to these lessons so watch out for that dropping into your inbox 😊
Don’t forget Mams, Dads and Carers that there are paper packs made up each Monday to go with all the lessons for the week (available from the office) which I know that the feedback has been that these have helped enormously.
Finally, if you have any questions (no matter how big or small) please give the office a call and we will respond as fast as possible.
Stay safe.
Mrs Jeavons, Miss Strophair, Mrs Graham and Miss Smith

Count On Us
HOME LEARNING
Hi Year 2,
We can’t believe it is the end of term already. Well done everyone for continuing with your home learning and sending in your pictures and videos. The end of year presentations for both classes are on the website on our year group page for you to enjoy. We both enjoyed working on our presentations, as it reminded us of everything you have all achieved this year. It has been a really unusual time and you have all done brilliantly. We’ve all had to get used to working in a new way and we are both proud of the way you have continued to work hard. It has been a real pleasure to see all your messages and work on Seesaw. It really has been a great way to communicate during this difficult time.
We hope you have a relaxing summer holiday, stay safe and enjoy yourselves.
Lots of love from Miss Strophair and Mrs Wakes xx

As we prepare to welcome the first groups of children back into school, we at Etherley Lane want to ensure that all of our children, whether they are continuing to learn at home or learning at school, continue to have the opportunity to access the same, high-quality learning experiences. We want to be as consistent as we possibly can be and, with this in mind, we are going to use Oak National Academy resources as our main tool for home and school learning. Oak National Academy is a collection of high-quality lessons and online resources, backed by the Government. Each online classroom on their website offers free access to video lessons, quizzes and worksheets.
From Monday 8th June, the Maths and English activities on each class page on our website that are usually uploaded will be replaced by the link to the relevant online classroom for your child’s year group. Each day, there will be a Maths and English activity provided that we would like your child to complete. Answers to activities will be provided during the activities and instant feedback is given after any given quizzes have been completed.
Where relevant, children may be also be asked to complete the Foundation activity each day. This could be linked to a particular topic or theme suitable for your child’s year group and these Foundation activities will replace the activity grids uploaded onto the class pages of the website every two weeks.
We feel that the introduction of Seesaw as a way of sharing learning and communicating with each other during this time has been extremely successful. We miss the children terribly and love that we are still able to be part of your children’s lives even though we cannot physically be with them. We will continue to use Seesaw the way that we do now; each week your child’s class teacher will set two activities for your child to complete. Your child’s class teacher will then give feedback on what they have done.
We really appreciate how hard you are all working during this time to support your children with their home learning and you are all doing an amazing job.
If you have any questions or queries regarding your child’s home learning, please do not hesitate to contact us using the main school email address.

WELCOME TO YEAR 2!
Our Year 2 teachers are Mrs. Wakes (Class 4) and Miss Strophair (Class 5) and they are supported by Miss Somers and Mrs. Hendry.
Below you can find out a little bit more about the Year 2 team.
Class 4
Hi, I am Mrs. Wakes and I am currently one of the Year 2 teachers (Class 4) and also the Geogaphy Co-ordinator. I have worked at Etherley Lane Primary School since 2015. Before that, I worked in other schools in County Durham. During my time as a teacher, I have taught in KS1, 2 and 3. I enjoy the different challenges that each key stage presents. I love to watch children grow and mature both academically and socially through their friendships and interests. My favourite subjects to teach are Maths, English and Geography.
Outside of school I am married and we have a daughter, Millie. As a family we enjoy travelling and have visited some great countries although our favourite place will always be Scotland. It is there that we unwind, relax and enjoy walking our two Border Collies – Ned and Dennis.
Hello I’m Miss Somers. I have part of the Etherley Lane team since February 2019. Our school really is such a friendly and positive place to be which has helped me settle in so well.
Since 2016 I have experienced nursery, primary and SEN settings working mainly 1:1 with children that need behavioural and educational support which is incredibly rewarding.
I live with my partner and 3 year old son Alex where have resettled back in Bishop Auckland after living in Vestmannaejar, which is a little island off the south coast of Iceland (famous for its Puffins and volcano).
I love to spend time as a family and having days out together. We love to visit the beach and go on long walks with our little cocker spaniel Roxy.
Class 5
Hello, my name is Miss Strophair and I am the Year 2 class teacher. I have been at Etherley Lane since 2004. I have worked in two other schools locally and also worked abroad as a young teacher. I spent 4 years teaching Bahamian children on Grand Bahama Island in the Bahama Islands. After a short spell teaching in Spennymoor, I then caught the travelling bug again and spent eight years teaching English to Bruneian children in Brunei Darussalam. I travelled extensively during my time there and still love exploring new cultures and meeting new people.
During my time in the Far East I developed a real appreciation for Asian food and enjoy re- creating Asian dishes at home. I am also a keen walker and find rambling is a great way to unwind after a busy day at school.
I’m Mrs. Hendry! I joined the team at Etherey Lane Primary School in February 2019 and mainly work in Year 2 and deliver Read Write Inc. in EYFS and Key Stage 1. Our school is such a friendly place to be and the staff and pupils have made me feel very welcome. My favourite time of the school week is Friday afternoon because I run drama privilege time with Miss Giblin. We have lots of fun exploring characters and roles and the children have some fantastic ideas.
I’m originally from Rotherham but I lived in Cumbria for a number of years before moving to County Durham. I am married and have a 5 year old daughter called Ivy and a 4 year old son called Arthur. I love going on adventures with my family and exploring new places. We have recently bought a tent so I am excited to plan lots of camping adventures with my children. When I was at school my favourite subject was English as I loved reading and writing stories. I’m a real bookworm and my favourite books are the Harry Potter series. My ideal day would be sitting on a beach on the Isle of Man with a pile of Harry Potter books!
