All Durham Local Authority (LA) maintained schools have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and are supported by the LA to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress and achieve their potential in school.
All schools are supported to be as inclusive as possible, with the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) being met in a mainstream setting wherever possible.
We recognise that some pupils will need extra support and adaptations to access the school curriculum and to participate in school activities. Etherley Lane Primary School has carried out an accessibility audit and has an action plan in place to ensure that the needs of children with a disability are met wherever possible. The action plan is reviewed each year or sooner should a specific need arise. Alterations and adaptations would be carried out in consultation with the local authority. At Etherley Lane we monitor the views of parents/carers and children with disabilities to ensure that they are treated equally alongside those without disability. Staff receive regular training on inclusion, specific learning disabilities and equality to ensure that they are fully aware of current legislation and policy.
At Etherley Lane Primary School we have a graduated approach to meeting the needs of SEND, ensuring early identification of needs and a continuum of support for children in order to enable them to make progress. SEND pupils are taught alongside pupils without SEND as much as possible and resources, work and support are differentiated to meet the needs of individual pupils.
Staff receive regular training on all aspects of Special Educational Needs. This includes training on emotional health and well-being, structured conversations, dyscalculia, dyslexia, speech and language and medical conditions. Training is reviewed to meet the needs of all pupils.
Please access this information from the SEN Provision menu. If you have any questions about SEND please contact the school and we will try our best to help you.
