How we support SEND

Waves

At Etherley Lane we use the ‘Waves of Intervention’ approach to help us to identify the level of support needed by each child:

  • Initial Concern (observe and monitor
  • Wave 1 (support through Quality First Teaching)
  • Wave 2 (support through time-limited 1:1/small group intervention)
  • Wave 3 (personalised plan of support)

Wave 1 support is provided through ‘Quality First Teaching’ in the first instance. Quality First Teaching forms part of everyday teaching. Download the PDF file below to find out more about Quality First Teaching.

Quality First Teaching (Wave 1)

Wave 2 support is provided through time-limited intervention. At Etherley Lane we have a wide range of intervention programmes to support teaching and learning across all areas of Special Educational Needs including speech and language, phonics, basic maths skills, reading, writing, social and emotional development, and fine motor development. Our teaching staff our skilled at adapting these interventions to meet the needs of specific groups of pupils. Download the PDF file below to find out more about support through intervention.

Interventions (Wave 3)

If your child is not progressing following support at Wave 2, the SENCO may suggest that your child is moved into Wave 3. The SENCO may ask your permission to seek additional advice from outside specialists such as health professionals, speech and language therapist, CAMHS or educational psychologists who would:

  • Carry out further assessment of your child’s needs
  • Provide advice to schools on how to best support your child
  • Suggest resources that would help your child make progress

This guidance and support may be enough to support your child with any difficulties to ensure that progress can be made in school. At this stage you will be supported fully by the SENCO who will consult you at every stage and will keep you informed about what is happening.

Following advice and guidance from other professionals, the SENCO will work with you to develop a personalised Support Plan for your child. Click here to find out more about Agencies & Partnerships we work with. This will identify the specific needs of your child and describe how we will support your child to make progress in the future. Download the PDF file below to find out more about personalised support.

Personalised Support (Wave 3)

If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail please contact the school to arrange an appointment.
